Japao is located 105 miles west of Rio de Janeiro, just over four miles off the verdant coasts of Angra dos Reis, Brazil’s “Green Coast,” but the travel time is comparable to that of Caribbean or Central American vacations. While most private island retreats require extensive boat journeys or connections, this municipality of 365 islands can be reached directly via flight and VIP helicopter transfer. With over 2,000 beaches and a mountainous, forested coastline, it is an extensive natural wonderland for exploration.
The main residence of Japao is a marvel of gleaming Brazilian and Balinese hardwoods from floor to ceiling, stretching from a canopy of towering coconut palms into the sun. Every room has picture windows to ensure that nature is on full exhibit. The indoor/outdoor Sonos sound system provides the ideal transition from the art-filled interiors to the exterior courtyard, where a gigantic boulder forms a natural gallery alongside the koi pond. Outdoor living spaces abound, ranging from a 1,000-square-foot open-air dining veranda with views of the ocean and jungle-covered mountains to an equally spacious pool deck with adjacent Jacuzzi. It is intimate enough for a couple, but spacious enough to accommodate special guests.
